Photo Contest Policies

Eligibility

Anybody who has been to China, and taken pictures of people, places, or events in China is eligible to enter the contest.

Photographer

Entries must be submitted by the original photographer. Do not submit a photo taken by someone other than you. You must be the sole owner of the copyright of any image submitted. Your submission of the photo is your guarantee that you are the author and copyright holder of the photo.

Number of Entries

An individual may submit up to two photographs.

Photo Subject Restrictions

Photos must be appropriate. Offensive, degrading, or otherwise questionable content will not be considered. The China-America Festival of Film and Culture (CAFFC) retains sole discretion as to what constitutes inappropriate content.

Photo Formats

Entries may be in prints or in JPEG format, color or black and white. Minor digital enhancement is permitted, but images that have been significantly modified or appear unnatural will be disqualified.

Submitting Photographs

Prints must be 4 x 6 inches or 5 x 7 inches. Do not send negatives. Attach a label to the back of each print with your name, email address and/or address, phone number and a brief caption telling the story behind the photograph. Do not write on the photo itself. Type the required information on a piece of paper no larger than the photograph you are submitting. If submitting multiple entries (up to two per photographer), include contact information and a story on each entry. Prints will not be returned. Please do not send your only copy of a photo.

You can also drop your prints off at the University of Richmond Student Activities Office in the Tyler Haynes Commons. Please call (804) 287-8504 for directions.

If you would like to submit your two entries in digital format, then make sure they are in JPEG format. Next, type your name, address, and a brief story into an email. Attach your two photographic files to this email and send it to filmandphoto@richmond.edu with the subject: Photography Contest Entry.

Deadline

Entries must be postmarked by Wednesday, September 18, 2006.

Ownership/Use Rights

Photographers retain the copyright to their photographs. By entering the contest, photographers agree to have their submitted photograph displayed at the University of Richmond. Photos will be credited to the photographer named in the entry form.

Judging

Entries will be judged on the basis of creativity, photographic quality, and effectiveness in conveying the unique, impressive, and interesting qualities of their subjects. By submitting your photographs to the CAFFC photography competition you are automatically eligible to win in any category. A panel of judges from the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University faculties and student bodies will judge the entries and all contest decisions are final. Entries that fail to comply with the contest rules will be disqualified.

Winners

Judges will select a winning photo for each of the five contest categories, and an overall Best of Show Grand Prize winner. Below are the categories and the prize for being selected the best photo in that category:

  • Best of Show $100
  • Best Story $50
  • Most Intriguing Landscape $50
  • Most Intriguing Architecture $50
  • Most Intriguing Person $50
  • Most Intriguing Event $50
Exhibition

Winning entries will be on display in the Tyler Haynes Commons and Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Libbie & Broad Streets from September 23 through October 1.
